The Deputy Director Two of the CAREC Institute Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev made a presentation in the Third International Ratings Forum, organized by Ministry of Finance of Uzbekistan on May 7, 2022.

Mr. Syed Shakeel Shah, Director of the CAREC Institute, and Dr. Hans Holzhacker, Chief Economist, attended the Consultations Meeting on CAREC Program Effectiveness and 2022 Deliverables, which was held in Almaty from 4 to 6 May 2022.

On the afternoon of 28 April 2022, the CAREC Institute collaborated with the International Finance Forum (IFF) to organize a webinar on "Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and the Five Central Asian Countries".

The second meeting of the CAREC Institute’s Financial Sustainability Working Group was held on April 25, 2022.

The Deputy Director Two of the CAREC Institute Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev moderated a session of the Regional Workshop on FTA Negotiation Capacity and Regional FTA Lessons in CAREC, organized by the ADB-funded CAREC Program on 19 April 2022.

Dr. Abdullaev noted about CAREC Institute strategic actions which match five priorities of the Vienna Programme of Action (VPoA), and highlighted the joint progress made by CAREC Program member states in implementing VPoA’s actions.

n 20 January 2022, the CAREC Institute and the Agricultural Development Bank of China (ADBC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Beijing.

Deputy Director One of the CAREC Institute Dr. Liang Ziqian attended a seminar titled “Overcoming Difficulties to Pursue Common Development and Working Together to Create a Shared Future — Chinese Enterprise Participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)” on 15 December 2021 in Shanghai.  

From 6 to 9 December 2021, Cambridge University Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) COMPASS Central Asia Forum held a conference on connectivity in the Eurasian region in partnership with the CAREC Institute.

On 16 September 2021, Dr. Liang Ziqian, Deputy Director One of the CAREC Institute, was invited to participate in an opening ceremony of the 18th Western China International Fair (WCIF) and the 10th Western China International Cooperation Forum.

On 13 August 2021, the CAREC Institute Deputy Director Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev attended the climate security seminar organized by Adelphi think tank (Berlin) for Germany’s International Diplomatic Academy. Dr. Abdullaev presented the current trends in climate change in Central Asia, and talked about growing water scarcity, and increasing need for investment in the water sector, also shared findings from the Institute’s recent publications on these topics.

The CAREC Institute Director Syed Shakeel Shah was invited to participate in a roundtable on the role of trade, investment, and development agencies (TIDAs) in kickstarting post-COVID recovery organized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on 5 July 2021. The meeting attempted to identify priority areas and actions for TIDAs to accelerate recovery, discuss how public-private cooperation can advance these areas and actions, and determine how the Forum can support the process.

The CAREC Institute Director Syed Shakeel Shah was invited to present at a panel session on financial inclusion organized by the CAREC Secretariat during Astana Finance Days on 1 July 2021.

On 24-25 June 2021, the CAREC Institute Deputy Director One Dr. Liang Ziqian was invited by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the SCO to discuss post-pandemic reality and cooperation opportunities between SCO and CAREC.

On 24 June 2021, the CAREC Institute Deputy Director Two Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev was invited to present at a webinar titled “Multilateral Development Banks as Key Partners in Promoting Regional Cooperation and Integration” hosted by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

The CAREC Institute and the International Finance Forum (IFF) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 30 May 2021 in Beijing to cooperate for fostering green growth and sustainable infrastructure in Central Asia.

On 22 April 2021, our Chief Economist Hans Holzhacker gave a lecture on “China Going Global and Eurasia’s Changing Economic Landscape” at the University of Virginia (UVA) with a focus on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The CAREC Institute management, represented by Director Shah, Deputy Director One Liang, and Deputy Director Two Abdullaev held a meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan represented by the First Deputy Minister Dr. Farkhad Arziev.
