Nam Foo, the 2021 visiting fellow, explored the potential economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the People’s Republic of China (PRC)’s foreign direct investment, especially on Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the Belt and Road countries.

This sixth issue of the CAREC Institute Quarterly Economic Monitor looks at economic developments in the CAREC region based on latest available GDP, fiscal, monetary, and external economy data, along with some high-frequency data and discusses several aspects of current and potential future developments.

It explores ways to unlock sustainable and inclusive growth opportunities in CAREC countries by analyzing innovations in digital transformation, e-taxation, financial technology promotion, and debt sustainability, and the impact on small businesses and households. The book’s insights provide a springboard for crisis response efforts across CAREC countries aimed at accelerating economic recovery.

Urban areas all over the PRC have embraced a wide range of solutions to reduce energy consumption, green and clean their energy supply, transform the concept of waste, promote green and blue spaces, and improve urban mobility. Each of the 50 featured solutions—some are projects sponsored by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)—shows how cities take climate actions and also create valuable co-benefits in terms of positive impacts on citizens’ public health and quality of life, as well as providing economic and additional environmental benefits.
