Call for Application: CAREC Institute Visiting Fellows Program 2026
The CAREC Institute (CI) is pleased to announce the open call for applications for its 2026 Visiting Fellows Program (VFP), funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Technical Assistance. The fellowships are intended for scholars at all levels to pursue research relevant to the priorities of CAREC 2030’s operational clusters and to advance the Institute’s mission.
Below is a detailed overview of the program and application guidelines:
Eligibility Criteria
- Citizens of ADB member countries, affiliated with universities, research institutes, or think tanks in those countries.
- Hold post-graduate degrees (PhDs preferred).
Thematic Research Areas
- AI (Artificial Intelligence)-Enabled Transport Connectivity
- AI for Transport Decarbonization and Green Mobility
- Intelligent Transport Systems and Smart Cities
- AI for Transport Resilience, Safety, and Climate Adaptation
- Transport Governance, Data Regulations, and AI Policy
Note: Preference is given to a multi-country analysis approach and policy proposals that address the CAREC region’s core cross-border challenges.
Fellowship Term
30 June – 30 October 2026, including up to one month in residence at CAREC Institute Headquarters (Urumqi, the People’s Republic of China).
Expected Outputs
- Publish research via working papers, policy briefs, Development Asia summaries, etc.
- High-quality papers will be selected for public presentations at events hosted by CI.
Fellowship Support
- Fixed remuneration: USD 6,000 for the fellowship period.
- CI will provide hotel accommodation in Urumqi for up to one month.
Important Dates
- Abstract Submission Deadline: 20 May 2026 (5:00 PM Manila/Beijing time)
- Fellows Selection: 30 May 2026
- Visit to CI HQ: 30 June – 30 October 2026, with a max. 1-month residential visit at the HQ
- Final Submission Deadline: 30 November 2026

Submit the following documents by 5:00 PM (Manila/Beijing time) on 20 May 2026 to emmat@carecinstitute.org, with email subject “2026 VFP Application”:
- Research proposal (minimum 2,000 words)
- Completed VFP application form
- Updated CV (max 2 pages, with relevant publications)
