CAREC Institute Deputy Director Kuat Akizhanov Attends 2026 CCICED Roundtable Meeting in Xiamen
Dr. Kuat Akizhanov, Deputy Director Two of the CAREC Institute, attended the 2026 CCICED Roundtable Meeting in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China, on May 25 and 26, 2026.
Hosted by the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), the meeting brought together over 150 participants, including CCICED international members and advisors, government officials, scholars, and representatives from international and partner organizations. Under the theme “Harmony Between Humanity and the Ocean: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth”, this year’s roundtable focused on global ocean governance and the green and low-carbon transition of marine industries.
Dr. Akizhanov, the International Advisor to the CCICED, participated in the open discussion of the session titled “Promoting Synergies Among Multilateral Conventions to Advance Global Ocean Governance”. Guided by key international frameworks including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), participants explored practical approaches to enhance coordination in global maritime management, marine biodiversity conservation and climate action, and build an integrated global ocean governance system that balances ecological protection, climate resilience and sustainable marine utilization.
In the interactive exchange, Dr. Akizhanov shared his views on critical marine environmental issues. He pointed out that ongoing degradation of marine biodiversity and climate-driven marine risks demand strengthened cross-border cooperation and unified global governance solutions. He further emphasized that enhanced coordination among key international environmental agreements can effectively remedy current deficiencies in ocean governance. Such multilateral synergy is essential to advancing the inclusive, steady and sustainable development of the global blue economy.
The event fostered open dialogue on improved global ocean governance and cross-border collaboration to support sustainable marine development.
